It would be more accurate to call this the non-sleeper bus
- because there's absolutely no way to sleep on it. I
was keen to get to Guangzhou, but the trains were booked
for the next few days. My helpful travel agent assured
me that the sleeper bus was quite nice - and the roads
were good - so it would be almost as good as the train,
but much cheaper.
Wrong!
The bus is built with three rows of beds -
one on each side and one down the middle - with upper and lower
bunks. The aisles are just about the width of my hips
- which means not quite wide enough for my shoulders. After
getting settle into my bunk, I found that it was just about
the same width as the aisle. I could only lay on my back,
and since there were rails on both sides to keep me from falling
out, I couldn't even put my arms down comfortably by my sides. Add
to that the fact that the bunk was about a foot too short for
me, and it makes for a very unpleasant night.
Oh, and did I mention that it was hot - and,
of course, the bus had no air-conditioner. The only thing
that made the trip bearable was the Australian family in the
bunks below and to one side. I spent most of the time
chatting with Jessica (the daughter) about life on the family
ranch (where they raise Oreo cattle) in northeast Australia. We
all shared munchies, traded travel stories, and generally complained
about the bad aspects of our travels. Somehow that makes
them less bothersome.
At any rate, if you ever have a chance to
take a sleeper bus - DON'T DO IT!!! |
